Cherries
This post was inspired by equal parts MJRC, who reminded me how much I love cherries, and Nat, who reminded me how much I love the John Mellencamp song Cherry Bomb.
I haven't taken many pictures this week but I had to snap these. We've had a lot of fires around here and the air is smoky so the light is strange. I haven't written much about The Prelude because Wordsworth and I are still slogging it out in the Alps. I was happy to get to this part because I've actually been hiking and camping around Mont Blanc and Chamonix, so now I feel like Wordsworth and I have a little something in common. In fact, it was while coming down from Mont Blanc that I discovered I have a touch of le vertige. I had to have my hand held all the way down but that wasn't so bad. I made it. The night sky there was incredibly beautiful- I'd never seen stars like that, and I haven't since. I would go outside my tent in the middle of the night and stare up at them even though it was cold. Wordsworth seems to have been less impressed but I'll write about that a bit later as I'm still puzzling it out. In the meantime, I will try to entertain. Once a showgirl, always a showgirl.
So, cherry songs! I started thinking about cherry songs and other than Cherry Bomb I thought of Warrant's Cherry Pie, which requires no elaboration, and also Cherry Tulips by Headlights, which I was on the fence about at first. But I like it, though not as much as I like Market Girl. Both are on their MySpace.
Any other cherry songs? What am I missing?
Even though it was not a warm a day today, I lay out on a blanket in the garden for a bit, eating the cherries and remembering so clearly what it felt like to be seventeen. I do still, truly, believe that holding hands means something, and that dancing means everything. Maybe more now than ever.

Sade does a 'Cherry Pie' and Ash a 'Cherry Bomb'. The Wannadies sing about 'Cherry Boy' in a slightly uncomfortable way and how about 'cherry oh baby'? There's the Jesus and Mary Chain's 'Cherry Came Too' and 'Black Cherry' by Polynya. Can we have Neneh Cherry, or even Ma Cherie Amour? Still no news on my cherry tree, although the cats have already eaten all of the baby birds, just in case. Opentop says hi.

Can't leave out The Runaways' own 'Cherry Bomb.' Joan Jett - proto riot grrl par exellence!! Then there's UB40's slightly embarrassing 'Cherry-O Baby.' Finally, don't forget 'Cherry Blossoms' by Tindersticks, Cocteau Twins' 'Cherry Coloured Funk,' Jack Off Jill's 'Cherry Scented,' or Celtic Frost's 'Cherry Orchards.'
Phew.

You guys are great, there are a lot of new ones here for me to check out. I feel a mix tape coming on! And I also forgot Cherry Blossom Girl by Air.
Tell Opentop hi back and maybe you'd better warn him to stay away from the cats.
Hope you had an OK trip FiL :).

I took a gander at my music collection and found I have over three hours of cherry-related music. Cherries are delicious. I always forget how much I like them until I happen across them at the supermarket, buy and eat too many and make myself a little ill. One day I shall learn to exercise some restraint.

You could always mention it to Tim as an idea for the Contrast Podcast. Cherries and other fruit. Fruit cocktail. Could work as a theme...

Eiron, three hours of cherry-related music!! That's impressive- I'm way off! I like your Fruit Cocktail idea, it seems like it would be a really fun summer CP episode, and I've also noticed that there are a lot of flower songs too... this makes me look at my music collection in a whole new way.

I once did a radio show, then a DJ set with some friends using the theme of flowers. Were we ever clutching at straws toward the end...

There's 'The Search For Cherry Red' by Jonathan Fire*Eater. as well as Cherry Girl' by The View. The former is stunning, while the latter is merely OK.
And we can't forget the fantastic 80s indie-label from the UK - Cherry Red Records.
Finally, there's the collective works of Neneh Cherry (as mentioned by Adam) but there's also her brother Eagle Eyed Cherry with his one-hit wonder 'Stay Tonight'.
All this and I dislike the taste of cherries...

Eiron, so flowers not as common as cherries then? That surprises me for some reason.
JC, I had forgotten about old Eagle Eyed Cherry. I know I know his song but I can't think of it right now... maybe because I can only hear your unforgettable rendition of 'Hot in Herre' in my head... I will have to seek out 'The Search For Cherry Red'

no need to search.....I had an intuition you'd fancy hearing it......

It's 'Save Tonight' not 'Stay Tonight'....
I could sing it very badly for you....
